Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is when a person could not pay attention and not focus on tasks, acts impulsively and cannot be made still. The disease originally was known as attention deficit disorder (ADD).It may start early on in childhood years and persists into adulthood. While not verified, the disease tends to run in families. If not treated accordingly, ADHD can cause problems.

ADHD is noted in children 6-12 years old. The child would need to undergo a physical exam to make sure he does not have other problems such as anxiety, depression, and other learning disabilities. Afterwards, the doctor will gauge the performance using guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association, basing it on written reports by people close to the concerned child.

While ADHD has no cure, the symptoms can be controlled using behavior therapy and medicines. In addition, children need to be watched by their parents once they begin to take ADHD medicines. Medicines may cause side effects like headaches, stomachaches, problems sleeping and the like. Side effects subside after a while; if not doses can be lowered.

With therapy, changes in the environment can be used to improve on the child's behavior. Counseling at school and at home add to the child's self esteem. Adults won't realize ADHD until the children are given diagnosis; that is when their own symptoms come to light. Adults with ADHD will find it hard to organize and focus. And while others manage to get around the symptoms, others tend to have trouble socially and physically.
